First Solar-Powered event in Bournemouth: The Green Unity Fair
By Ruby Limbrick.
Bournemouth’s first solar-powered event took place at Shelly Park in Boscombe on Saturday.

The Green Unity Fair was organised by Radical Media and The Transition BH Hub with the aim of combining entertainment with education on “green living.”
Angela Pooley, coordinator of East Dorset Friends of the Earth thought the concept was “absolutely fantastic”. She told BHbeat: “It’s about showing people that sustainable lifestyles can be fun.”
The fair had 37 stalls from arts and crafts, plants and organic foods as well as a solar-powered music stage with local musicians. There were plenty of activities for younger children from face painting to story telling.
Lee Hadaway, a volunteer at the Green Unity Fair and a worker at Wimborne Recycling Centre brought his solar-powered wheelbarrow disco which had been made from recycled materials – even the records had been recycled.
He told BHbeat: “It’s about showing people the rubbish they throw away can still be used. Helping the environment can be fun and it’s something we should all be looking to get involved in.”
The combination of solar-powered entertainment and the a variety of stalls created a relaxed and casual atmosphere which was well received by visitors.

s abbott – you obviously haven't realised that encouraging people to 'go green' is not the preserve of veggies and vegans, it's something for everyone. Any sort of catering firm should simply cater for everyone, not just a few. I,m always mystified by the number of non meat eaters I know who need vitamin supplements etc. Why is this? Incidently, the global use of internet search engines, e.g. Google results in more carbon emissions than the airline industry.

We had a great day and I'm looking forward to next years but to be really honest I I was actually shocked that meat was being served- it was the first Green related event that I've ever attended that has allowed it! You only have to google 'unsustainability of meat production' to read no end of scientific articles and evidence on why raising animal for meat and dairy is such an environmental disaster.
We were running the SARC stall with the free vegan samples and cakes and had comments every 5 minutes from people saying how surprised they were at the decision. It would be brilliant if events like Green Unity were able to further promote the important links between our diets and its effect on the planet. Any sort of catering firm should in this day and age be able to provide fully veggie and even vegan options on request and there are many smaller groups and organisations that would love the opportunity to share decent animal free food to a public which is increasingly taking notice. Well done to the organisers for putting on the event though and hope it gets better and greener every year!

I attended the fair, it was ok..really quiet though and if I hadn't known about it I wouldn't have know it was on, where was all the arrows and signs pointing from the beach? I enjoyed some of the bands, tho a shame there wasn't a beer tent as planned..
